Fill the piata with up to 2 lbs of candy and small prizes. Hang the piata low enough so that everyone can reach a string. Have the children sit or stand in a circle around the piata. A piata is a brightly colored papier-mch covering either a clay container or cardboard shape. It supposedly started with Chinese farmers that used similar objects to the piata in ceremonies to ensure a fruitful harvest. Around the 16th century, Spanish missionaries introduced the piata to the Aztec Indians in Mexico. In the ceremonies, the missionaries filled the piatas with fruit, candy and coins to represent temptations as they tried to convert the Aztecs to Christianity. Piatas have become popular at birthday parties in Latin American and the United States. They come in all shapes, sizes and colors and are filled with candy, toys, confetti and more. At the party the piata is suspended from a rope and children, usually blind folded, take turns hitting it with a stick until it breaks and treats falls out.
